MY BACKGROUND
Darren JOHN
My interest in the voice has been ongoing since I went to drama school and began training my own voice for my own performance career. I found myself always wanting to know WHY and HOW? How was my voice functioning anatomically as well as creatively.

Over the years of both performing and teaching, this led me to research and learn more in the hunt for answers. After attending numerous courses, I decided to take my knowledge to the next level, and began studying for my Advanced Professional Diploma in Teaching Contemporary Singing with The Voice College completing this with distinction.
​
Combined with my many years of teaching experience, this has equipped me with the science backed knowledge and understanding to develop healthy and balanced voices.
​
I am also an accomplished musician playing piano and saxophone and work regularly as a musical director. I am very used to accompanying vocalists as well as working with a band. My music theory and musicality brings another skill to my coaching - after all, singing is not just a technical exercise!

THE METHOD
HOW I WORK
Many singer's and singing teachers may refer to using or teaching a certain 'method' of singing. These include Estill, Speech Level Singing (SLS), Complete Vocal Technique (CVT), and others.

All have made huge and valid contributions to the world of voice science, and all have something to offer every singer.
​
I was looking for that one method too.... but through my training I learnt that I could benefit much more from using the research and science from many methods.
​
It is impossible to say there is one correct way to sing - after all singing is an art form. Instead, taking from all the methods, I have learnt to teach a healthy and balanced singing form, from which art can be created.
​
Voice science has come on so far and is ever expanding as we learn more things, hence why we need to be open to changes which can apply to all methodologies.
​
I teach from knowledge that is based in science. I have studied the anatomy of the larynx, and use this somatic approach in my teaching.
I continue to keep up to date with the latest scientific developments through my continued professional learning.

Technique
The foundation of heathy and balanced singing relies on good technique. For professional singers this will support them through their career. We can use technique to work through problem areas, strengthen notes, balance registers, and build your voice to its full potential.

Repertoire
Many singers enjoy singing a wide variety of styles, and this cross-training of styles is becoming widely accepted. From classical to jazz, music theatre to pop, expand your rep and showcase your vocal capabilities.

Professionals
Sometimes we just need a refresher, some "me time", a little brush up of our skills. Spend a lesson treating yourself and keep your instrument in fine tune.
Auditions
Whether it be for a professional production, or a place at drama school, they all require you to audition. Perhaps you've been sent material to prepare? I will work with you to prepare for your audition so you can leave feeling you gave your best. Preparation is key.

Performance
What makes a great performance?
Connection to the words, acting through song, story telling, interpretation, musicality, artistry, to name a few. A performance is individual to the singer but there are some paths to follow to achieve a great performance. With my skills as an actor, and a musician, I can help guide you there.
